Global “Passport” for Local Children

In a 2024 civic engagement event, Passport to the World, which was held at the Lewisburg Children’s Museum on Saturday, March 30, the Foreign Language Teaching Assistants at Bucknell University brought their cultures from Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Lebanon and Spain to local children. Children also got to learn about the American Deaf Community and the culture of American Sign Language (ASL). The festival featured hands-on crafts and activities, such as Japanese origami, coloring the flag of Colombia, making Play-Doh Italian pizza, and crafting the national tree of Lebanon. Award winning international film to be screened @ Campus Theatre

Produced by Professor Coralynn Davis, Women and Gender Studies, this award-winning hybrid documentary film centers on the role that women’s stories can play in subverting the patriarchal structures in Mithila, South Asia. The film will be screened at the International Feminist Activism Film Festival on April 16. 2024 at 7pm. On Wednesday, April 17 a series of short films on the topic of feminist activism from around the globe will be screened. Films are from Nicaragua and Chile. Festival of International Shorts!

Festival on the Science Quad! The Festival of International Shorts was held on September 14, 2023. The festival, an annual event hosted by the Bucknell Student Language Council each fall on the Science Quad, showcases films from around the world. The theme of this year’s festival was humanity, with contributions from Germany, Argentina, Malaysia, Egypt, and Italy. The cinema event aims to promote linguistic and cultural learning and appreciation. Experience the World with BMES, NSBE and SASE!

The College of Engineering had a combined event last week that was also open to the entire campus.  BMES, NSBE and SASE joined together to host our Experience the World event. We had around 60 people in attendance and students enjoyed a tasting of various international foods along with international snacks and desserts/candy at each table. Students traveled around the world to various stations to get their passport stamped.  The stations included paper Russian nesting dolls, Chinese lanterns, a West African drumming lesson, Mexico’s papel picado, Australian dot painting and finally a crepe station.
